Dragon’s Dogma 2 makes me feel like a NPC
Even as someone who didn’t have any experience playing Dragon’s Dogma before booting up the sequel last week, one thing I knew about it were the ludicrous screen filling special attacks. Meteor showers or small earthquakes that would wipe out half a dozen enemies at once. What I didn’t expect was that I would experience them only one hour into the game. The other surprising thing was that I actually wasn’t the one doing the cool thing. Whilst I trade blows with a single goblin for probably 20 seconds, one of my pawn companions decides to end my miserable display of power by summoning a tornado that immediately disposes of my nemesis and five others like him.
I’m a couple of hours in and although it gets better, I still feel like the NPC companion to a group of badass adventurers. Hell, they look like the main character party, whilst I can’t afford gear that looks half as decent as one of the local guardsmen. Which is funny because it goes totally contrary to the narrative. I’m the chosen arisen. The world practically evolves around me and my companions would gladly die for me as their master. They don’t get tired of emphasizing that fact. But here I am hiding behind a tree shielding my health hoping they just finish the fight before my HP hits zero.
And honestly I don’t mind that. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is not a game I play for the immersive narrative experience. I soak in its atmosphere and like to experiment with pawns and skills. Both aspects being goofy at times only adds to its charm.
